Mythology and Worship
Why did people talk about the myths?
Mythology was used to tell the stories of the gods. Most people think they started around 700 BC. The Greek people believed in the myths and they were spread to teach people and children not to get to overconfident or you will get knocked down a peg or two.
How were they worshiped?
The Greeks thought the gods were watching everything they did and would take care of their needs. They also thought the gods would protect them from danger. The gods were worshiped by sacrificing animals, offerings, songs and prayers. Most of the main gods had temples built for them. The more sacrifices they got the more the people who worshiped them received.
Why did people stop worshiping the Greek and Roman gods?
This answer is very tricky. Some of my teachers told me there was a Roman king who didn’t want his people to be conquered. So the night before the war, the Christian God came in a dream and told this king to have his soldiers paint the sign of the cross on his soldiers armor, weapons, and shields. Once he awoke he ordered everyone to paint the symbol on their equipment. It was said when the war started they defeated their opponents. Not a single soldier was killed on the Roman king’s side. Then he got his people to believe in Christianity.
What is the origin story of the Greek gods?
Everything started off with Chaos. Chaos gave birth to Gaea who then created Ouranos, known as the sky, and Gaea is the earth. So Gaea and Ouranos have loads of children like the 100 handed ones, titans, and cyclops. So Ouranos, being the nice guy, decided to throw his kids down to hell and trap them there just because they were ugly. Gaea being a sensible mother freaked out and got really mad at Ouranos for doing such a horrible thing. So Gaea got her titan children and tried to convince them to help her kill their dad. Kronos, one of Gaea's titan children decided that he would do it. He got four of his brothers to help him do it. They hatched a plan to lure Ouranos down to earth where he would be at his weakest and away from his domain.
Gaea FAKELY apologized to him over a Romantic dinner. So during this dinner Ouranos was feeling kind of guilty. While they were eating, Kronos jumped out with his special scythe, made by his mother and cut up his dad. Ouranos managed to curse Kronos telling his son that his children will cut him up the exact same way Kronos cut up his dad.
Soon after the family drama Kronos freed his siblings from hell. Gaea decided that since Kronos was doing a great job that she was going to take a nap for thousands of years. Now Kronos brothers and sister were getting married and having kids and that made Kronos feel lonely because he couldn’t fall in love and have kids. But one day he started falling in love with his sister Rhea and soon the two of them got married. They had a daughter named Hestia and she radiated power which scared Kronos. When Rhea wasn’t looking he ate his daughter. Now I know what your thinking GROSS AND HOW COULD RHEA LET THAT HAPPEN! Well when Rhea saw it happen she freaked out screamed, yelled, cried, and called Kronos some not so flattering names. She couldn't attack Kronos because he was all powerful, had a dangerous scythe that would really hurt, and if she did attack him she may hurt the baby. Now gods can’t die they can be hurt but not be able to die. She would have to play the waiting game but over time her and Kronos still had more kids and like a great dad he ate Demeter,Hera,Hades,Poseidon, and a rock.
Rhea finally putting on her smarty pants was tired of her deadbeat husband cannibalizing their kids. So on her last child and the most powerful one yet was Zeus. She hid him away and gave Kronos a rock to eat. Now you may be wondering did he fall for it? Well yes…….since he wasn’t paying that much attention. She told him she would never have any more children which Kronos took well. After having five godly kids in his belly he wasn’t feeling the best. Zeus was raised on an island and as soon as he reached adulthood, him and his mother decided to take revenge on his horrible dad. Zeus mother brought him to his dad while Zeus was disguised as a titan and applied for the job as a cupbearer. Soon Kronos trusted Zeus since he always made the best nectar ( the godly drink of the gods and titans). In a drinking contest, where Kronos got kind of drunk on the nectar, Zeus slipped some mustard into it. Kronos threw up all five of his children. In some other versions of the myth it was wine and mustard which doesn’t make sense since Dionysus the god and creator of wine wasn’t born yet. Anyways Zeus caused a titan godly war with pretty explosives. But before the war started he went down to hell to save his uncles who made him, Poseidon, and Hades weapons. You may be thinking why not the girls well IDK, but they won the war. They punished everyone who sided with Kronos. Kronos was sent to hell. Atlas was forced to hold up the sky. Atlas daughter Calypso was trapped on an island to fall in love with every hero she met. They would always break her heart. The other ones got easier or harsher punishments. So after all of that that the gods won. They had thousands of offspring gods, demigods, horses, cyclops, and many others to come.
